Montessori style bedrooms

You might have heard about Montessori as a liberal and innovate education system. But some parents apply this revolutionary method at home. They get inspired by the principles of Montessori philosophy to decorate their kid’s bedroom in order to give them more independence and enhance their creativity.

Apartment Therapy

The Montessori method takes its name from Dr María Montessori, an Italian educator from the early 20th century. She developed this educational philosophy based on her experience with kids coming from difficult backgrounds. The main pillar of Montessori approach is to develop the children’s maximum potential by letting them discover and explore the world at their own pace. This approach was later developed as an educational method based on self-directed activities, hands-on learning and collaborative play. The teacher offers age-appropriate activities to guide the process.

To create a bedroom inspired by Montessori philosophy you only need a bit of creativity and common sense. Visit the blog of You Can Deco to find inspiration and tips to decorate and transform different spaces in your home.  You will find some ground-breaking ideas that contrast from traditional children’s decoration.

The main goal is to create an friendly space where they can experiment safely. Below we will provide a few ideas to help you create the best environment for your little ones:

Ground level bed

The main benefit from having a ground level bed is that they can get into bed by themselves as they gradually learn to crawl or walk. And with a bit luck, they will love their independence and won’t wake you up at 6am on a Saturday morning when you can’t even open your eyes!

Simplicity

There is no need to fill every corner of their bedroom. It would be better to free up some space, which will allow them to move and play comfortably. The Montessori approach recommends having furniture at different heights so your little one can start to learn different routines such as where to keep their toys or getting their shoes and clothes. We don’t pretend that a baby will select their own clothes but they may gradually crawl to get their favourite toy!

mariewillumsen.dk-02

Toys

This method recommends quality over quantity regarding toys. It also emphasizes the importance of materials and colours as they make a difference in stimulating their creativity and interest. Who hasn’t witnessed the baffling situation of giving a toy to a baby and watch them play for hours with the cardboard box?

Pillows and natural fabrics

The idea is to give them items they can move, stack or use to build their own spaces using their imagination… such as a cottage, a magical hideout or a storytelling space….free from ghosts! And if there is enough room, you can add a simple tipi tent to stimulate even more their imagination and create their favourite playtime space.

Security

With a simple decoration, it becomes easier to ensure that all elements are safe and appropriate to the child’s age. You would also have to make sure that the toys can be handled without adult supervision. The furniture must be safely attached to the wall and without hazardous edges. Plugs and light spots must be protected and if there are any windows, they should be secured in a way that prevents them to open it.

Beautiful accessories

Children are like sponges and learn from everything, including what surrounds them in their bedroom. Therefore, it is key that they are surrounded by beautiful graphics on the wall and a range of different colours. Things like mobiles and beautiful blankets or bed linen can stimulate their imagination.

justrealmoms.com.br-02

The Sensory Spectrum-02

The Montessori method encourages children to make their own decisions and interact with their environment, so beautiful books, musical instruments or a board where they can draw are great options. The idea is to create a space that inspires and comforts them at the same time.

Mirrors

One of the elements found in the Montessori style bedrooms are the mirrors placed at the height of the baby, near the bed, so they can see their own reflection and learn to recognize themselves.

What do you think about the Montessori style bedrooms? Are you up for it? What would you add to foster the creativity in your kid’s bedroom?

Fun*das bcn goes to London

Fun*das bcn travelled to the British capital on the 19th and 20th of June to visit Bubble London, the largest children’s fashion trade show in the UK.

Our first impression was a very well organized trade show with many different sections to discover exciting new brands and market trends.

fundas bcn en feria bubble

Near the entrance, you could find the POP area where new brands and designers were displaying their beautiful collections. Noodoll, an English brand caught our attention immediately. Do you know them? They design accessories, toys and stationery products with very friendly and cute little monsters. We love their simple design and their fair trade philosophy. The Noodoll family has many characters and we couldn’t pick our favourite! These little monsters brightened our morning.

03

After a well needed coffee (and a delicious muffin) we headed to the Bubble Bump section, a new standout area dedicated to maternity and nursery product.  The beautiful  teething Jewellery from Nibbling.  Modern accessories for mums with style!

We headed to the seminar section and listened to the presentation about the power of customer reviews. We were surprised to learn that video reviews have 1200 times more impact than regular reviews.  Something to think about for our marketing strategy…

After our lunch break at a Vietnamese restaurant nearby, we explored the rest of the trade show.  We discovered many European brands including some Spanish Brands that we hadn’t seen before.
We would like to highlight the French brand Pouce et Lina that designs elephant shaped musical mobiles. All their products are handmade with love in France.

After two busy and exciting days we went back home with great memories, a stack of business cards and fabulous ideas. Despite the heavy rain, we loved our London visit and we are already looking forward to coming back next year!

Facts about cotton

¿Did you know that all of Fun*das bcn products are made with high quality cotton?

Cotton is a naturally soft material that has many benefits for the delicate skin of your little ones.  It is probably the most popular fabric for babies due to the comfort, durability and softness it provides.

Let’s take a look at the cotton properties:

03

  • Hypoallergenic: It means that the cotton has been tested and has properties that help prevent irritation, itching, allergies and infections. All our products are hypoallergenic, so you can relax knowing your baby’s skin is in good hands,
  • It’s breathable: Absorbs sweat and allows air to circulate freely, preventing fungus and infections.
  • Absorbs well water: we use cotton fabrics in our towels and ponchos for that reason. It is a practical material for drying your baby after a bath.

  • Strength and durability: All our products can be washed in the washing machine as many times as you need. It is tear proof and one of its characteristics is that it doesn’t expand. All our products have undergone a shrinkage control and have been treated to prevent lint, which ensures the best quality.
  • It’s versatile: The cotton fibres are very adaptable and depending on how they are woven they can create very delicate products such as swaddles to more sturdy products such as changing bags.

How to make a decorative frame.

The materials you need are :

  • A piece of fabric (ours is from Fun *das Bcn Mint Arrow)
  • A wooden frame of 20 cm .
  • A piece of felt with a contrast colour
  • Needle, embroidery thread , scissors .
  • Pencil or pen
  • Fabric glue (optional)

Step by step instructions:

1) Place the fabric on the frame, keep it tight but be careful not too tighten it too much that the pattern looks distorted. Close the screw.  TIP : Leave excess fabric outside the frame in order to adjust if needed during the following steps.

2) Handwrite your baby’s name on a small piece of felt. If you prefer you can use a computer to print the name with your favourite font. If you choose this option the name dimensions should be approximately 10×15 cm. The front used in the tutorial is Chasing Embers , you can download it for free following this link:

(LINK: http://www.dafont.com/es/chasing-embers.font)

TIP : To remove all traces of pencil marks on the felt, put the printed name backwards. In that way, if there are any marks left they would be on the other side.

3) Cut the piece of felt as precise as possible with the help of scissors and cutter.

cortar-aplique

4) Put the name in the middle of the fabric and secure it with pins as if you were going to sew it.

If you prefer you can use fabric glue to simplify the process.  If you do, make sure the edges of the letters are well glued. If you’re only going to put the name you can leave it in the exact center, if you prefer to add a birthdate, then put the name slightly towards the top margin.

5) If you have chosen to sew, use the right needle.

6) Do you want to add the date of birth or a short text underneath? Handwrite with a pencil or pen under the name and sew it with needlesTIP : To erase the pencil marks use a small soft toothbrush, some water and natural soap. Rub very gently and let it dry.

bordar-segunda-linea

7) Put the fabric back in the frame, stretch it but without deforming it, and tighten the screw of the frame.  To finish, cut the excess fabric for a perfect finish and hang it on the wall!

That is all!  Your frame is ready!  A great DIY accessory made with love.

We hope you enjoyed this tutorial.

DIY: Figures and colours

This is a game for the little explorers in your house. Simple and easy to do and loads of fun.

Helps to stimulate children’s psychomotor development by having to insert all figures in the  coloured felt. At the same they improve agility in their hands by using the buttons.

IMG_3110
IMG_3115

Material:

– Coloured felt

– Scissors

– 2 buttons

– Needle and thread

-Tape

Step by Step guide:
1- Sew the two buttons, one on each end of the tape .

2- Cut the colour figures. I’ve cut 3 pieces of each (I’ve used serrated scissors, which gives them a better look, in my opinion)

3- Fold the figures in half and make a little slot in the middle, wide enough for the button to go through it .

4- We already have our game ready: the game’s goal is to move all figures through the button (they learn to catch the button). Children also learn to use different shapes and colours. It’s also  a good game to keep them focused.

What I like the most about this game is that is doesn’t take much space and you can keep it in a bag and carry it with you at all times.

I hope you give it a try.

Now, I’m a mum

How has your life changed since you have kids?

In my case, I think the biggest change has been an internal one, the revolution of being a mum. I have rediscovered feelings and emotions that were hidden and I’ve had to re-learn and re-discover life through the eyes of my kids. Currently, one of my priorities is to invest time in my personal development.

And in the professional arena, has there been any changes?

After becoming a mum, I started to work from home because it was easier for breastfeeding. It was a change in my work flexibility, although I can’t really complain as I had a “European working schedule”.

Through social media I’ve had the opportunity to reconnect with friends and new projects were born. I have created Kiva Magazine, a digital magazine that I’ve wanted to create for some time now.

Your favourite moment during the day:

Half morning, when everyone is out and I can sip my coffee without being rushed…

Who would you have dinner with if you had a chance?

With Asier Etxandia. I recently saw the movie El Intérprete and I loved it.

When you have some time for you, what do like to do?

I like to spend time with my friends.  And going to the theatre is one of my passions.

Your next trip will be…
Maybe to Portugal, as we’ve never been there. And if not, a weekend to the South, to see the sea.

What do you understand for comfort?

Currently, work flexibility.

Suggest a toast for…

Consciousness. Something that disrupts me and makes me grow at the same time. And for those amazing dads, who are behind our blogs and projects and helps us to have a bit more time.

With which colours you identify yourself?

For my house, I like white and natural colours. To dress, I love dark blue.

If you had to interview another mother, who would you suggest?
Difficult decision… there are many! Maybe Cris Saraldi, from Froggies. Someone I enjoy spending time with and I always learn a lot from her.
