You might have heard about Montessori as a liberal and innovate education system. But some parents apply this revolutionary method at home. They get inspired by the principles of Montessori philosophy to decorate their kid’s bedroom in order to give them more independence and enhance their creativity.

The Montessori method takes its name from Dr María Montessori, an Italian educator from the early 20th century. She developed this educational philosophy based on her experience with kids coming from difficult backgrounds. The main pillar of Montessori approach is to develop the children’s maximum potential by letting them discover and explore the world at their own pace. This approach was later developed as an educational method based on self-directed activities, hands-on learning and collaborative play. Ground level bed

The main benefit from having a ground level bed is that they can get into bed by themselves as they gradually learn to crawl or walk. And with a bit luck, they will love their independence and won’t wake you up at 6am on a Saturday morning when you can’t even open your eyes!

Simplicity

There is no need to fill every corner of their bedroom. It would be better to free up some space, which will allow them to move and play comfortably. The Montessori approach recommends having furniture at different heights so your little one can start to learn different routines such as where to keep their toys or getting their shoes and clothes. We don’t pretend that a baby will select their own clothes but they may gradually crawl to get their favourite toy!

Toys

This method recommends quality over quantity regarding toys. It also emphasizes the importance of materials and colours as they make a difference in stimulating their creativity and interest. Who hasn’t witnessed the baffling situation of giving a toy to a baby and watch them play for hours with the cardboard box?

Pillows and natural fabrics

The idea is to give them items they can move, stack or use to build their own spaces using their imagination… such as a cottage, a magical hideout or a storytelling space….free from ghosts! And if there is enough room, you can add a simple tipi tent to stimulate even more their imagination and create their favourite playtime space.

Security

With a simple decoration, it becomes easier to ensure that all elements are safe and appropriate to the child’s age. You would also have to make sure that the toys can be handled without adult supervision. The furniture must be safely attached to the wall and without hazardous edges. Plugs and light spots must be protected and if there are any windows, they should be secured in a way that prevents them to open it.

Beautiful accessories

Children are like sponges and learn from everything, including what surrounds them in their bedroom. Therefore, it is key that they are surrounded by beautiful graphics on the wall and a range of different colours. Things like mobiles and beautiful blankets or bed linen can stimulate their imagination.

The Montessori method encourages children to make their own decisions and interact with their environment, so beautiful books, musical instruments or a board where they can draw are great options. The idea is to create a space that inspires and comforts them at the same time.

Mirrors

One of the elements found in the Montessori style bedrooms are the mirrors placed at the height of the baby, near the bed, so they can see their own reflection and learn to recognize themselves.
